Tri-State Storm Update From WCBSTV

6:00PM EST: The first major snowfall of the season has arrived. Snow began to transform the Garden State into a winter garden Shabbos morning, and by the afternoon, the Big Apple saw flurries.

New Jersey has already seen significant snowfall and accumulation. Flakes began falling in many areas long before daybreak and immediately began sticking to roadways, making travel treacherous in some areas. Toms River has been blanketed by 13 inches of the white stuff by early Motzei Shabbos, with more on the way.

Snowfall was light in the city for much of the daytime hours on Shabbos, but it will get worse.

While New York City isn’t seeing a ton of the white stuff yet, flurries are expected to pick up at around dinnertime, and to intensify into late night and early morning hours. Most of the accumulation will build up overnight.

New York City is expected to get between nine and 15 inches of total snow accumulation by the time the storm system passes through.

Winds gusting as high as 36 mph are also expected on Motzei Shabbos.

However, the worst of the snowfall is reserved for the eastern half of Long Island. Nassau and Suffolk Counties are expected to receive 12-16 inches of snow. In fact, both counties were under a Blizzard Warning until 11 a.m. Sunday. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph were also possible, especially late Saturday afternoon through the evening.

The winds and snow will reduce visibilities to under a quarter mile at times and cause significant blowing and drifting of snow.
